I was first introduced to Prezi last semester but never completed one as a class assignment. I introduced it to my students at school and had them complete an assignment with it but I still never had the time to sit down and design one until now. My first attempt with Prezi reflects the title of my blog, meaning, it ran late into the night………It started off with me taking way too long choosing a theme. They had been updated since the last time I had logged on. I decided on the snowflake theme since snowflakes seem to be the “theme” of life for us right now. Then the snowflakes got in the way of my text on some frames so that was kind of annoying.
I have a presentation for my technology department on Infographics that I plan on presenting in a PLC whenever we get back on schedule from these snow days. This is also something I would introduce to my class, minus some some of the lesson plan resources included. So I decided to see what I could do with it by using Prezi.
My beginning slides with Prezi were very frustrating! I just couldn’t get things to work as easily as I do in PowerPoint. It was very hard to figure out the text boxes and how to move them around. I only have two frames with background color because I couldn’t figure out to do it, those just sort of happened. I don’t think they look very good and wish I could have added color to the entire circle.
Things got easier as I went a long I’m happy to say! I mastered the text boxes and even figured out that I could move the entire circle and add more circles if I wanted to “group” topics together. I am not happy with the way my hyperlinks look in Prezi. For example, the link to the Google search page to look at examples of Infographics. The link I wanted to use was so long that I just linked to the search page and then I will click on the images tab to bring up the page I want to show. If anyone knows how to make the links look better I would welcome the advice.
I had no problem importing graphics or the YouTube videos and ended up being quite pleased with the project considering it was the first one. I know with more practice I could probably do a better one. I checked it out on a different computer and everything worked, so here goes!
With all new technology there is a learning curve and we are all fearful of branching out and trying something new. I introduced this to my students last semester and they seemed to find it more exciting than I did. As I watched them work I remember thinking to myself that this seems really difficult and I would just be sticking to PowerPoint. Some loved it and others did not. I think most were like me….and just needed a little more practice. One student used it for a presentation in her French class and really impressed her teacher who had never see a Prezi before. I think Prezi can be a little more exciting than using PowerPoint but it seems those features have to paid for. Only a handful of teachers at our school have heard of or use Prezi, so I will one day host a meeting to introduce to our faculty in a PLC or professional development setting.
